Chris is a US citizen and native American-English speaker who has over 12 years of experience working in management consulting in Mainland China. Currently based in Shanghai, he is president and managing director of LeanTech Consulting, a boutique consultancy focusing on strategy, operational excellence and leadership. Work experience and clients have come from a wide variety of industries including automotive, aerospace, pharmaceutical, energy, chemicals, paper & packaging, nutrition, light & heavy manufacturing, distribution & logistics, government, retail, garments, heavy construction, and supply chain management.

In his career, Chris has worked for Fortune 100 companies, SMEs, small single proprietorships and startups. He has experience with C-suite executives, senior and middle managers, team leaders, shop-floor operators and hopeful entrepreneurs. He has negotiated and worked with business stakeholders of all types: vendors, customers, owners, creditors, regulators, bureaucrats and government. Besides managing his own business, he has managed factories in China as well as worked with large multi-nationals and Chinese manufacturers focused on improving their value streams.

Early in his China experience, Chris stumbled onto serving as an adjunct professor at a university and discovered, much to his surprise, that he loved it! He has taught Business Leadership, Business Operations and Supply Chain Management in International MBA programs for Fudan, SKEMA and Webster University in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Suzhou. He was a founding member and chairman of the board of directors of the China Center for Operational Excellence. CCOE was a Chinese JV partnering with Utah State University’s Jon S. Huntsman School of Business’ Shingo Institute, an organization focused on leading businesses to operational excellence through principle-based leadership and Lean Manufacturing.

Chris is driven to create improvement in people’s lives by raising standards of living through an intense focus on adding value and eliminating waste wherever it is found. He believes business, not government, is the best vehicle to accomplish this and it is through developing excellence in business that improvement can be leveraged. He subscribes to the principles of virtuous leadership and tries to practice it in all he does.

Chris has been coaching colleagues, employees and clients for most of his career. He is a certified executive coach and a member of the International Coach Federation as well as the ICF-Shanghai chapter. He is a member of ATTA (the Asia Transformation & Turnaround Association), focused on transforming businesses under duress.He graduated from Brigham Young University with a Master’s Degree in Accounting and is a CPA. He also holds CPIM and CIRM certifications from APICS (American Production and Inventory Control Society).
