I have extensive experience of formulating, presenting and implementing business strategy most notably in my role as VP EMEA and MD China. I developed a new strategic vision for China, bookended by a simple pictorial and frequently repeated slide,, presented and embraced by both CEO/EXCO and China team. I have frequently been complemented on my ability to define and communicate business strategy, especially in my tenure in China
I have been heavily involved in three post-acquisition integrations which involved organisational restructuring and design, strategic redirection and consolidation of systems. The most successful was the integration of the acquisition of a EUR 500m former competitor, for which I received positive feedback from many employees, including in the acquired company
A key element of my role as MD of a Western multinational's Chinese company, where I am the only foreigner, is to create a communication and learning bridge between China and the rest of the organisation, based in Europe, USA and SE Asia. I have carried out a number of workshops in China, numerous 1-1 mentoring sessions and delivered "educational" presentations to colleagues in Europe on doing business and working in China. I have sometimes been described by my Chinese colleagues as half-Chinese, even if I speak only elementary Mandarin!
In my job as VP EMEA I had additional responsibility for rolling out our company's new "Core Values" not only in Europe, but also in our operations in Saudi Arabia and South Africa, so in very diverse cultures. This was integral to the building of a new company culture as a result of a transformational acquisition. I subsequently worked on a similar project in China following another transformational acquisition. These, and other earlier experiences helped to develop a strong interest in organisational culture and cross-cultural integration
