1) Cultural sensitivities
This is underlying almost everything I have been doing so far. One example: a top executive asked to be coached about cultural differences between Chinese colleagues and those coming from the company's original country. During our interactions, it became clear that the real issue was not about interactions between Chinese and non-Chinese colleagues, but about different mindsets and perceptions such as technical vs. non-technical staff. We re-focused on these issues and found a solution that allowed to company to be more perception-driven in its responses to customer complaints.
2) Develop strategic vision
As the leader of Ruder Finn's Insight and a trainer/coach for top executives, a part of my work was to support clients in developing a strategic vision for China. A recent example, in partnership with Ruder Finn, was to help two top managers of a German-Chinese JV to position a new product while ensuring that this new product would help the company to strengthen its strategy in the coming years. In the course of our exchanges, we identified some points which did not make sense and that did not contribute to a clear long-term strategy in terms of positioning and brand values. We then focused on finding new directions fitting into the brand values, but also into the overall JV long-term objectives.
