CRISIS MANAGEMENT WEBINAR RECAP

March 2020

On Feb 20th, GloCoach hosted a webinar on “The Principles of Crisis Management”. Our all-star panel included seasoned business leaders from different industries who shared their approaches to surmounting the challenges we all are facing from the outbreak, and key lessons learned. We have summarized their key insights below.

During the webinar, our panelists shared valuable insights regarding managing this virus crisis:

Steffi Soetebier

HRVP Porsche China

Communication is crucial. During this crisis, Steffi’s team worked very closely with the crisis management team at VW, hosting meetings every 2 days to share the latest updates and align the broader team on best practices. Communication at an individual level has also proven critical to addressing individual situations on a case-by-case basis as employees return to the office. To alleviate concerns of staff, the company not only needs to implement measures to ensure safety, but also demonstrate understanding and show empathy.

In order to provide medical solutions to support clients during the crisis, Vincent’s team is working 24/7 in the field, ensuring they are able to assist as many clients as possible during this critical time. As such, training both staff and clients on effective precautions to be taken when working together has been key – rather than a one-off communication, it’s an ongoing effort. This not only includes wearing masks and gloves, but also other clothing and equipment for high risk areas. To further reduce risk, Thermo Fisher is also leveraging existing digital technologies and exploring innovations like Virtual Reality to assist clients remotely. One key for their success has been a modular emergency plan in place from the very beginning of the crisis that can be adjusted as they go.

Simon Ma

CEO
GLF Medical Technology Ltd

Simon’s business focuses on selling surgical equipment to hospitals. The current crisis initially brought the business to a halt. As an experienced CEO running an SME, Simon is accustomed to getting results with limited resources and manpower. He focused his team on the factors they can control and remind them not to dwell on those they can’t. He also knows that as an SME, the current business slowdown creates an opportunity to improve internal processes and company structures. Simon believes it’s important not to let this time go to waste and instead use it as an opportunity to get an edge over your competitors.

Having dealt with the swine flu during her time at Hong Kong Disneyland, Theresa is no stranger to the challenges of a virus outbreak. Prior to the coronavirus outbreak, Theresa had already established an ops training and documentation team who communicate on a daily basis. The team had a high-level crisis management plan that was updated real-time as the situation unfolded. When management made the decision to shut down Shanghai Disney Resort as a precaution, Theresa and her team focused on safely redeploying essential staff and strategies to keep those no longer on-site engaged for the duration of the closure. From leveraging their internal app and TV channel to organizing activities in the staff dorms, Theresa emphasized the importance of assessing the circumstances on a daily basis, while also preparing for a safe return to business as usual.

The webinar concluded on a positive note. Our panelists acknowledged that circumstances are finally starting to take a turn for the better. Businesses are slowly but surely starting to resume operations. This experience provides numerous lessons to support future business development if properly applied to a company’s operational strategy and processes.
